ARTS WEEK

The first week back after 1/2 term is our arts week. This year, each class is going to use one of the natural wonders of the world as their inspiration. We are going to use Mount Everest, the highest point in the world,  as ours.


During the week, we are going to use this amazing mountain as the inspiration for making a large 3D piece of art work, writing poetry and doing some creative mathematics. We will also try our hand at creating some short animation films. We will develop lots of new skills in art, DT & ICT.

EVEREST FACTS

Did you know, that scientist think that Everest was formed when the Indian and Asian tectonic plates moved, over 60 million years ago.

Everest grows about a 1/4 inch every year!

The temperature can drop down to -80'F. Freezing! Which means the snow never melts at the top of the mountain.

It is 8848m above sea level - making it the highest point in the world.

ICT, art & a splash of science!

On Thursday, the class developed the skill of combining words and graphics, to create these fantastic, abstract works of art. Look carefully and you might be able to make out the different parts of a plant in the pictures.


















NUMERACY

This week we have been learning about classifying and sorting data. To end the week, the class were given a list of class names and then set the challenge of creating different ways of presenting this data. There were some great ideas, from using  letters of the alphabet to the number of syllables in a name.

SCIENCE & LITERACY

This week in literacy we have started to look at explanatory texts and in topic we have been learning about how plants actually make their food.

We have learnt how plants suck water up from their roots, 'breathe' in air from little holes in their leaves and then combine these with sunlight to create their own sugary food to feed from.
Peter and Charlie learning to use a microscope, so they can examine the roots of a plant, to find the 'hairs' that suck the water up into the stem.





 We have combined our new skills and knowledge to create storyboards that explain how a plant is able to successfully  grow. 

Everyone worked really hard and did brilliantly. Here is some examples of the working going on in year 3 at the moment.

SCIENCE & ART - Our Earth topic

As part of our topic 'Our Earth' we have started to look at the importance of plants. Here are some of our still life water colours, which have been annnotated, with facts about the plant.

GEOGRAPHY & ART

In year 3, we have been studying the surface of the Earth, before we delve below the surface! We have developed lots of geography skills over the last fortnight.

We can:
  • Locate places on a map and use an atlas
  • Draw a map from a high view point
  • Recognise features from photos and label them
  • Sketch from an observation
  • Create a field sketch and label it
  • Know why a key is needed
and all this on one page!  We also looked at our Earth from different satellite images and then tried to recreate it by printing with different materials.

SUMMER TOPIC - OUR EARTH

I hope you've all had a good holiday and are ready and raring to go on your last term as year 3's! As you know know our topic for this 1/2 term will be Our Earth

Based on the questions you asked at the end of last term, we will start by looking at what the Earth actually looks like, and then work our way in from its surface to the Earths core. 

Don't forget that there will be lots of resources put onto all the different blog pages to help you, whether it's PE, numeracy, literacy, topic or any of the other subjects. Do look at them regularly, you can always go over old activities to jog your memory and keep the skills you have learnt fresh in your minds.

Your new targets will also be on the numeracy & literacy pages. I will leave the old targets on them too, just to remind you of what you need to keep doing. An old target, shouldn't be a forgotten one.
