As the year progresses I will list below a number of different links and video clips designed to give an understanding of how we approach the different aspects of numeracy and literacy in year 3. I hope that they will be helpful in giving you a greater insight in to the work and methods your children will be using in class. Of course, if you would like any additional explanation or advice then please don't hesitate to ask me.

MULTIPLICATION
The children are going to be learning a couple of different methods to help them multiply numbers. The first method is through using arrays. The video below helps model this.
The second method, we call the grid method. It is a more advanced way of multiplying, and is suitable for children who are progressing well with their times tables. It involves partitioning the numbers and is generally used as a step, before the more formal written method.
LEARNING ABOUT 3D SHAPES. This will help explain how we define a shape, and the sort of language the children will be exposed to.
USING NUMBER BONDS TO 10 TO WORK OUT LARGER CALCULATIONS.
DIVISION
This video clip, shows 1 of the ways in which we teach the children to divide. We link division with multiplication, but also as repeated addition or subtraction.
SUBTRACTION - USING A NUMBER LINE
This video will show you how we use a number line to subtract in year 3. The children will subtract different amounts at each stage, depending on the numeracy skills. Some will subtract 1 unit at a time, others will chunk numbers, into tens & units.
NUMERACY - HOW TO USE A NUMBERLINE.
This video clip will give you an idea of how we teach children to add up in year 3, in the first instance. Initially most children will be working with smaller numbers, but the principle is the same.
PROPERTIES OF 2D SHAPE - This web link will explain about the properties of 2D shapes. It will go into more depth than your children will, but should help to explain what they are doing.
PARAGRAPHS- As part of our story writing, the children will be learning to use paragraphs to help their writing flow. The web link below, helps explain in more detail when and why paragraphs are used.
Using Paragraphs information
PHONICS PLAY - If you go into this web link and then click on the parents link, you will find information to explain what phonics is, how it is used in school and what you can do to support your child with their reading.
Your children will be using this in school and have access to it on the front page of our blog, under 'useful links'
