The taste testing confirmed - the flapjacks were delicious and you would have loved them. What a shame it snowed!

SNOW DAY!
Well, everyone was really excited in the Thomas family this morning. I was woken up before 6.00am to look at the snow!
I hope you all have a lovely time outside and make the most of it, but when you're cold and tired here are some activities that you can do indoors.

SNOW DATA
Try measuring how deep the snow is, at different times of the day, and record your data. Here's a picture of my son Sam, measuring the depth of the snow, at 10.00am this morning.
The snow was 13cm's deep. We are going to check again at 12.00pm, 2.00pm and again at 4.00pm, if it keeps snowing.
You could make a graph or bar chart to show what you have found out.
SNOWFLAKES
Did you know that every snowflake is different and that they are crystals? Here are some that have been photographed through a microscope.
Try drawing or making your own paper snowflakes. Can you create one that looks like the snowflakes in the picture. Here's some instructions on how to do it. Try experimenting with the way you cut the paper.
Don't forget all the weblinks on our blog. You can practise your numeracy skills, phonics knowledge and if you go on the literacy blog there is a link to a website that helps you write an adventure story. Perhaps your story could be linked to playing in the snow.
Have a lovely time - play safely, keep warm and I look forward to seeing and hearing about what you have done.

LITERACY
This week we have been learning to describe a character in an adventure story. Some children practiced developing their ideas, using 'PEE on the page'. This stands for making their Point, Explain it and then give Evidence from the book to support it. Aaliyah and Jan did this really well, and even used quotation marks and commas in their writing, far exceeding the expectations of a year 3 writer. Fantastic.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
I hope you've all had a fantastic holiday and are ready to come back to school, rested and raring to go!
We are going to start a new topic this term about the Mayan people. You may have heard of them. They were an Ancient Civilisation who were wrongly interpreted as predicting the end of the world on the 21st December 2012 (at the end of last term). Of course, we are all still here, and besides it was a mistake made by some modern men who didn't know enough about the Mayan people. By the end of this topic you should be able to explain why this mistake was made.
Start to have a think about what you'd like to find out about the Mayans. We will watch a video which is on the topic page and decide on the questions we want to answer, on Monday.
