ART - A study of water lily ponds.

In production week, we learnt a little about Claude Monet and had the opportunity to study some of his water lily paintings. We wanted to create a back drop for our dance in the school production, so set about painting our own water lily ponds, using our colour blending skills and also created collages using our ICT skills.

The children really worked hard and produced some fantastic works of art. Make sure you come to the school production and look out for the backdrop to our dance.

DT - Production week - The frog Prince & his pond!

As part of our production week, we tried the very difficult art of paper folding - called origami. The children discovered that to be successful, they needed to use their numeracy skills as well as DT skills. They needed to fold precise rectangles and triangles, using lines and angles. They also had to assess their work as it progressed. It was really challenging. Here is some examples of our lily pond flowers and frogs.

OUR NEW TOPIC - C'EST LA VIE!

Our topic for the next few weeks is called C'est la vie! (That's life!) and it will be about all things French.

The children have planned the questions they want answered, which include: What are the regions of France? What food is eaten? How tall is the Eiffel tower? How long does it take to get there? What are the houses like and how many people live in France?
Watch this space to see how we go about answering these questions creatively and don't forget to look at the topic page for activities and video clips.
Remember we have our French page to support our learning of the language too.

LITERACY - writing postcards & setting an experiment.

Just before 1/2 term, we started to learn about the different styles of writing letters. We learnt how to send emails and how to write a postcard. To make the experience more real, the children had to write their postcard to someone important to them - most were written to their family. As part of the process, we discovered that no one really knew how long a postcard would take to arrive at it's destination (most children thought it would only take a few hours at most) So, we decided to set up an experiment. Postcards were written, and then Ezekiel (photographer) Jan and Jess went to the post office, bought the stamps (a mixture of 1st & 2nd class stamps) and safely deposited them in the right post box. Interestingly the cards took between 1 and 5 days to arrive, and 1 seems to have got lost (poor Peter). Perhaps we should write to the Royal Mail and let them know!

Ezekiel, the photographer, proving we were at the Blandford post office.

Buying the stamps. Jan & Jess, were extremely polite when asking for their stamps. A credit to their families & the school.

Making sure they went into the right post box.

Jan, inspecting the post box carefully!

PRODUCTION TOPIC

I hope you are having (have had) a fabulous holiday. I thought you might like to know what we will be getting up to after 1/2 term.
We will be having a short topic based on our school production - A Grimm night for Hans Christian Anderson. As part of our topic, we will learn to write formal invitations in literacy, design and create tickets for the performance and create a backdrop for our dance. We will study the French artist Monet..........
and learn the Japanese craft of paper folding, called Origami.

We will also be filming some of our art work and developing our photography skills. Our work will, of course,  need to be of a high quality, because it will be seen by everyone, and we will be attempting things more than once, so that we can improve it and be the best that we can be! Be prepared for hard work and lots of fun. The best kind of work!
